Which Applications and Services Are Part of Lasernet 11?
A Lasernet 11 system consists of some mandatory applications and services. Depending on project requirements, you can install additional optional components. It can be helpful to understand what software Lasernet consists of, and what the role of each element is.
Mandatory
The following applications and services are mandatory components of a Lasernet system.
Lasernet Environments
Each Lasernet environment runs a Lasernet workflow (that could include data transformation and document generation, management, and distribution elements). These workflows are known as Lasernet “configurations”, which are “deployed” to Lasernet environments.
Each Lasernet environment runs as a Windows service. This Lasernet 11 Installation and Setup Guide includes information on creating Lasernet environments as a part of the overall Lasernet 11 installation and setup process.
For more information about the Lasernet environment Windows services, see Information about Lasernet 11 Services.
The Lasernet Server installer copies the underlying Lasernet environment software to the Lasernet server. The Lasernet administrators use Lasernet Service Manager to create Lasernet environments.
Lasernet Config Server and Lasernet Config Web App
The Config Server service is the central communication point for all the components of the Lasernet system and manages the Lasernet configurations that the environments run. Aspects of system configuration (such as user access to the Lasernet system) are managed by the Config Server.
Lasernet administrators use the Lasernet Config web app.
This guide includes information on how to use the Lasernet Config web app to complete various tasks in the overall Lasernet 11 installation and setup process. The Lasernet Administration Guide also describes tasks that you complete through the Lasernet Config web app.
For more information about the Lasernet Config service, see Information about Lasernet 11 Services.
The Lasernet Server installer installs the Lasernet Config service and web app.
Lasernet Service Manager
This application enables administrators to create and configure Lasernet environments and configure other Lasernet services (such as the Lasernet Config Server service).
This Lasernet 11 Installation and Setup Guide includes information on how to create Lasernet environments as a part of the overall Lasernet 11 installation and setup process.
The Lasernet Server installer installs Lasernet Service Manager.
Lasernet Monitor
This application enables administrators to read Lasernet environment logs.
For more information, see Lasernet Monitor Guide.
The Lasernet Server installer installs Lasernet Monitor on the Lasernet server.
The Lasernet Server installer (which is run on the server) and Lasernet Developer installer (which is run on client computers) both create a Start menu shortcut for Lasernet Monitor 11:
Lasernet Server installer: Creates a Lasernet Monitor 11 Start menu shortcut (on the Lasernet server) that runs
LnMonitor.exe
.Lasernet Developer installer: Creates a Lasernet Monitor 11 Start menu shortcut (on client computers) that runs
LnLogin.exe
with a-monitor
parameter. For more information about LnLogin, see the information below.
Note
Users can access a web version of Lasernet Monitor through the Apps menu of the Lasernet Config web app.
Lasernet Developer
Lasernet Developer enables users to create the Lasernet configurations that Lasernet environments run.
For more information, see Lasernet Developer Guide.
When you run the Lasernet Developer installer on a client computer, it installs LnLogin; it does not install Lasernet Developer. The installer then creates a Lasernet Developer 11 Start menu shortcut that runs LnLogin with a parameter that commands it to run Lasernet Developer. When a user clicks this shortcut, LnLogin downloads Lasernet Developer from the Lasernet server, installs it on the client, and then runs it.
LnLogin
The Lasernet Developer, Lasernet OCR, Lasernet Printer Service, and Lasernet Monitor applications run on client computers. However, the corresponding installers do not install these applications on client computers. Instead, they install LnLogin and then create a Start menu shortcut that runs LnLogin with a parameter that commands it to run the relevant application.
For example, the Lasernet Developer installer installs LnLogin on a client computer, and then creates a Start menu shortcut that has the following Target: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Formpipe Software\Lasernet 11\AppLauncher\LnLogin.exe" -developer
When a user clicks this type of Start menu shortcut, LnLogin:
Displays a window that enables the user to select a Lasernet Config server to connect to.
Connects to that server, collects the user’s credentials, and then logs the user into the Lasernet Config server.
Checks which version of the relevant client application (Developer, OCR, Printer Service, or Monitor) is present on that Lasernet server.
If that application is not installed on the client, or if a different version of the application is installed on the client, LnLogin downloads the application from that Lasernet server and installs that application version on the client.
LnLogin downloads the application to the following location on the client (appropriately substitute
<user name>
):C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Formpipe Software\Lasernet 11\Login\Versions
Runs the client application (with a connection to the selected Lasernet server).
Note
This tool can install a maximum of five versions of an application (such as Lasernet Developer) on a client computer. This capability is used if the Lasernet servers that the user connects to are not all running the same version of Lasernet.
If the user connects to a Config Server that requires a version of Lasernet Developer that is not installed and five versions are already installed, the oldest installed version is uninstalled from the client and then the required version is installed.
Note
If a new Lasernet release contains a updated version of a client application (such as Lasernet Developer), the new Lasernet Server installer copies the updated application version onto the Lasernet server. When a user next clicks that client application’s Start menu shortcut and selects that Lasernet server, LnLogin will detect the newer software on the server and will download and install it on the client.
For this reason, you do not need to run a client application’s installer (for example, the Lasernet Developer installer) on client computers when upgrading Lasernet, unless the release notes for the new Lasernet version indicate that it includes a new version of LnLogin.
Lasernet Print Capture
This service is started automatically by the Lasernet Server installer. When started, the service creates a Windows print queue named Lasernet Print Capture 11. The print queue is used to capture overlay files which can then be imported manually into a Lasernet configuration through Lasernet Developer.
For more information about the Lasernet Print Capture service, see Information about Lasernet 11 Services. The Use Overlays for Graphical Design page of the Lasernet Form Editor guide describes the process of creating and using overlays.
The Lasernet Server installer installs the Lasernet Print Capture service.
Optional
Depending on project requirements, the following Lasernet components can be installed.
Lasernet Web Client
Lasernet Web Client is a web application that enables users to remotely view job queues and perform basic tasks like editing JobInfos, and rescheduling, searching, viewing and deleting jobs, and releasing temporarily paused jobs.
The Lasernet Web Client installer installs a Windows service that hosts the Lasernet Web Client website.
This Lasernet 11 Installation and Setup Guide includes information on how to install and configure Lasernet Web Client as part of the overall Lasernet 11 installation and setup process.
For information about how to use Lasernet Web Client, see Lasernet Web Client Guide.
Note
Lasernet 11 does not include a desktop Lasernet Client application.
Lasernet Printer Service
The Lasernet Printer Service handles Lasernet on-premises and cloud printing.
For more information, see Lasernet Printer Service Guide.
When you run the Lasernet Printer Service installer on a client computer, it installs LnLogin; it does not install the Lasernet Printer Service app. The installer then creates a Lasernet Printer Service 11 Start menu shortcut that runs LnLogin with a parameter that commands it to run the Lasernet Printer Service app. When a user clicks this shortcut, LnLogin downloads the Lasernet Printer Service app from the Lasernet server, installs it on the client, and then runs it.
Lasernet OCR
Lasernet OCR Editor and Lasernet OCR Engine are together a client and server input management solution for maintaining incoming business information and for extracting data from documents for import directly into a downstream workflow system.
For more information, see Lasernet OCR Guide.
When you run the Lasernet OCR installer on a client computer, it installs LnLogin; it does not install Lasernet OCR. The installer then creates a Lasernet OCR 11 Start menu shortcut that runs LnLogin with a parameter that commands it to run Lasernet OCR. When a user clicks this shortcut, LnLogin downloads Lasernet OCR from the Lasernet server, installs it on the client, and then runs it.
Lasernet Dictionary 11 Service
Only required for users running Lasernet Input Management with dictionary support.
The Lasernet Service Manager tool creates the Lasernet Dictionary 11 service.
